Coursework: Preliminary exercise 2025
1) State the song you have chosen for your preliminary exercise.
2) Choose at least three music videos similar to your concept and watch a clip or more from each. Make bullet-point notes on everything you watch, commenting on camerawork, editing and mise-en-scene.
Dave – “Streatham” (2019)
Camera Work
Frequent use of tracking shots following Dave around his neighborhood.
Handheld feel gives it a documentary/raw realism vibe.
Low angle shots emphasize power but also ground him in his environment.
Mise-en-Scène
Filmed directly in Streatham, South London :barber shops, chicken spots, council estates.
Everyday people and friends appear, creating authenticity.
Grey skies and tones match the track’s gritty vibe.
Editing
Cuts between different neighbourhood spots to show a panoramic portrait of his area.
Fairly slow pacing lets shots breathe rather than being hyper cut.
Emphasis on continuity over flashy transitions.
Lil Durk – “The Voice” (2020)
Camera Work
Mix of performance close ups and wide establishing shots of Chicago streets.
Smooth glides + drone shots balance street authenticity with cinematic polish.
Frequent direct to camera delivery creates intimacy and authenticity.
Mise-en-Scène
Urban backdrops: murals, city blocks, OTF crew presence.
Darker color grading, with cold hues, reflecting themes of struggle, loss, and loyalty.
Durk often centered alone in the frame — emphasizing his role as “the voice” of his people.
Editing
Emotional pacing: slower cuts for reflection, tighter edits when intensity rises.
Occasional overlays of /tribute images (to lost friends) → adds emotion.
Kanye West – “Homecoming” (2008)
Camera Work
Iconic tracking shots of Chicago skyline and Ye walking.
Alternates between wide city landscapes and medium shots of Ye and Chris Martin.
Static, symmetrical compositions give a polished feel.
Mise-en-Scène
Chicago landmarks (skyline, waterfront, stadiums) = central to the concept.
Ye styled in streetwear = blending with his city’s aesthetic.
Contrast between Ye (Chicago streets) and Chris Martin (piano, abstract space) creates duality.
Editing
transitions between performance and city.
No flashy effects → lets the visuals serve as homage to the city.
6) Plan a shooting schedule that will ensure everything is filmed by the deadline. Include when, where, who is required, planned equipment and any other aspects you need to arrange.
